Yes, a straight marriage can survive a same-sex affair. It is a betrayal with an added layer of complexity, not an automatic end to the relationship, and couples do heal from it through structured, expert-guided work.

When a woman discovers her husband’s affair was with a man, or a man discovers his wife had an affair with a woman, the betrayal arrives with a second question stacked on top of it: who is my partner, really? That second question is what makes this kind of infidelity feel uniquely impossible. But the injury underneath, the broken trust and the shattered sense of safety, is the same injury we help couples heal from every day.

A woman rests her hand on her cheek with a troubled expression while a man behind her holds his face in his hands, both turned away from each other in visible distress. When a Wife Had an Affair with a Woman or a Husband with a Man

This is the subject of the latest episode of the Relationships Uncomplicated podcast, where Idit Sharoni, LMFT, is joined by two members of her clinical team, Dr. Yael Haklai-Neagu, LMFT, and Alana Tokayer, LMFT. All three are licensed marriage and family therapists who specialize in infidelity recovery, and all three have worked with couples in the aftermath of same-sex infidelity in a heterosexual marriage.

In This Blog You’ll Find…

  • Whether a same-sex affair means your partner is gay, and why attraction, behavior, and identity are three separate things that don’t always line up.
  • Why this kind of betrayal feels like the worst case imaginable, and why complexity does not mean the marriage is beyond repair. Straight marriage can often survive a same-sex affair.
  • Some of the real reasons a straight-identified man has a same sex encounter, many of which have nothing to do with sexual orientation.
  • Whether a bisexual partner can be monogamous, and what actually predicts whether a marriage heals.
  • How to find the right help, and why the wrong therapist can make this harder.

Does a Same-Sex Affair Mean My Partner Is Gay?

Not necessarily. A same-sex encounter alone does not determine someone’s sexual orientation, because attraction, behavior, and identity are three separate things. They don’t have to match.

Most people treat them as one. In reality, there’s who a person is attracted to, there’s what a person does, and there’s how a person identifies. A man can identify as straight and have a same-sex encounter. A man can be attracted to both men and women and want his whole life with one woman. Sometimes a behavior reveals a great deal about a person, and sometimes it reveals almost nothing. You cannot know which from the affair alone.

Is Sexual Fluidity Normal in a Straight Marriage?

Sexual fluidity – is the capacity for attraction to shift or extend beyond one’s stated orientation over time. That said, sexuality was never two boxes with nothing in between. Most people fall somewhere along a range, and many never examine where, because they never had a reason to. Your partner may be discovering that about himself in real time, in the most painful way possible. That understanding does not excuse the betrayal. It simply widens the lens beyond the single conclusion most people jump to in the first minute.

Is a Same Sex Affair the Worst Kind of Betrayal?

No. It is a betrayal with an added layer of complexity, not a betrayal that is worse or beyond repair. Every couple brings a unique combination of circumstances, and this is one of them.

Is a Same Sex Affair Harder to Heal From?

Consider a physical injury. Three people can each suffer a serious fracture, but one heals cleanly, one involves nerve damage, and one happens alongside a second injury a doctor must treat at the same time. All three are serious. The fundamental principles of healing hold. What changes is what each person’s recovery has to account for. Same sex infidelity is the fracture that carries an extra complication, and complexity is not the same as impossible.

Two hands gently cradle a black ceramic bowl repaired with visible gold seams where it once cracked, a kintsugi-style symbol of repair. Can a straight marriage survive a same-sex affair? The core wounds of infidelity remain: deception, loss of trust, trauma, anger, and the collapse of the world you thought you knew. The work of healing does not suddenly become unrecognizable because the affair partner was the same sex. There are additional layers to explore, including a hurt partner’s questions about identity. There’s also a deep loneliness that can feel even heavier here because of the stigma. But those layers make the process more complex, not hopeless.

Why Would a Straight Man Have a Same-Sex Affair?

There are several reasons, and many have nothing to do with a man being secretly gay. Assuming that a man who has sex with a man must therefore be gay narrows the lens. It limits a couple’s ability to understand what actually happened.

What Causes a Same-Sex Affair In a Straight Marriage?

For some men, a same-sex encounter is about erotic interest. Others want a specific experience they feel too ashamed to ask their partner for. Many describe it as feeling safer or more transactional, with less pressure to perform. For others, the roots reach back to earlier trauma. There is a documented connection between childhood sexual abuse and later same-sex encounters for some men, and it has nothing to do with orientation. Dr. Joe Kort, a sex therapist whose work the episode references, describes this as returning to the scene of an old wound and trying to experience it, this time, with a sense of control.

When a Same Sex Affair Really Does Mean Your Partner Is Gay or Bisexual

And yes, sometimes a man has been gay and in the closet for years, and the discovery of the affair is also a painful outing. That happens too, and it is never steered away from. The point is not to replace one automatic conclusion with another. It is to make room for the full range of what might be true.

Can a Bisexual Partner Be Faithful in a Marriage?

Yes. Being attracted to more than one gender is not the same as needing more than one partner. A bisexual person can be monogamous in exactly the way anyone else can.

Attraction lives inside a person. Commitment is built through daily choices. A straight man notices other women and chooses his wife. A gay man can love and be attracted to his wife specifically. A bisexual man is no different from either. The fear that keeps hurt partners awake, that a bisexual spouse will always be missing something or secretly yearning for what they gave up, assumes that attraction equals a lack of control. It doesn’t. What predicts whether a marriage heals is not a person’s place on the spectrum of attraction. It is whether they tell the truth going forward, take full responsibility, and do the work of rebuilding.

When Honesty Means the Marriage Can’t Continue

At the same time, this is not toxic positivity. It is possible that a partner is gay and that the marriage, in its current form, cannot continue honestly. Relationship Experts holds no agenda about whether a couple stays or leaves. The goal is clarity and honesty, arrived at together, rather than a verdict handed down by someone else in the first week.

How Do We Get Help After a Same-Sex Affair in Straight Marriage?

Healing straight marriage after same-sex affair requires structured, specialized support, not a therapist who reaches for a label the moment they hear the words “same-sex affair.” The right professional understands human sexuality, can hold the complexity without rushing to a conclusion, and helps both partners explore rather than handing them two bad options.

If you’re carrying this right now, you don’t have to carry it alone, and you don’t have to decide anything today. A good first step is our free guide, Navigating Betrayal and Identity. It reframes what this kind of betrayal actually is: the injury is the secrecy and the breach of trust rather than the gender of the affair partner, and it gives you an evidence-based framework for understanding sexuality so you can quiet the assumptions and see your situation more clearly.
